My bride has asked at least ten-thousand times, "Can we get another dog?". Years of persistence paid off when I finally said yes. We decided to add another chocolate lab to our family. We decided our sweet girl Aurora, a chocolate lab, needed a brother. We worked with a breeder to find a upcoming litter and months of excitment produced three little boys. We met them when they were a day old.
A month later we came to pick our boy. Only two came out. We inquired where the third little man was, here is where the hammer dropped. Puppy three had broken his back leaving him paralyzed in the rear. The best explaniation we could figure was he was stepped on. Our hearts exploded. I have never been so sad around puppies in my life. We ended up choosing another puppy, Cedar.
The car ride home was quiet, somber, uncomfortable. That night the Mrs. and I talked about it and decided to get the third puppy, Sequoia, as well.
Let me make this short, fast foward a year, Sequoia is a rockstar. Funny, driven, loyal, loving and handsome as they come. It has been a year of learning and countless vet visits. However I can guarantee one thing, I wouldn't trade him for anything.
We started his Instagram to bring awareness to his story. We continue to change perspectives daily. Sequoia swims, runs, climbs, hunts, retrieves, he's well mannered (for the most part), and proves handicapped dogs deserve a fair shot too.
After all of that, we now have a German Short-haired pointer puppy named Timber in the house too. This pack is the best thing my wife and I have ever done. Please consider giving a handicapped animal a shot. I guarantee they love more than you could ever expect.
