Maizie became paralyzed in her back end shortly before her 6th birthday. The cause was unknown, but her presumed diagnosis was spinal meningitis. She had severe nerve damage.
After 3 weeks of no leg movement, the vet recommended we get Maizie some wheels so she could be more mobile. Maizie was on the move since day one of paralysis, so we agreed a cart would be great for her. She always had such a zest for life, there was never a doubt in our minds that she would do well, whether that was with the support of a cart or if she’d regain the ability to walk on her own.
Maizie adapted so quickly and loved going for long walks in her cart everyday. She still played with her doggy friends. She went for hikes and played in the creek. Nothing slowed her down, and she never stopped living just because her legs didn’t work like they used to.
After 5 months of intensive treatment and rehab, Maizie started walking on her own. She still has a neurological deficit, but she amazes us everyday with the progress she continues to make. She has taught us so much. Having a special needs dog has been such a rewarding experience.
