WHAT IS A PANGOLIN?

Pangolins are the only scaled mammal on the planet. Their protective, overlapping scales are made from keratin - the same protein found in human hair and nails. The scales are believed to be medicinal in many traditional Asian remedies.

Pangolins are shy and solitary creatures. They prefer their own company and only become social when mating or rearing their young. When threatened, they roll into an armored ball. While this is an effective defense against most predators, it’s no match for the ultimate threat - humans.
Pangolin live in trees and burrows. Their diet consists of ants, termites, and other insects. These unique creatures have existed for approximately 80 million years and can be found in 51 countries.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO SAVE PANGOLINS?

An adult pangolin will eat more than 70 million insects every year. This makes them very valuable members of the ecosystem. Pangolins are constantly maintaining their ecosystems. They control ant and termite populations that, if left unchecked, could degrade trees, plants, and soil that other organisms rely on. Pangolin are often referred to as “Earth’s gardener’s” helping to aerate the soil and control pests.

The survival of these unique animals is intrinsically linked to the survival of other wildlife species.

WHY ARE PANGOLINS ENDANGERED?

An estimated 100,000 pangolins are removed from the wild each year. Over a million pangolins have been illegally poached from the wild in the past decade to feed the demand for their scales and meat.

Pangolins also face the common peril of habitat loss and degradation as a result of deforestation and agricultural expansion.
